This project started from a simple question: can a small viola sound big?
The second question: what is a “big sound”? Last but not least: how can I make a (small) viola sounds big?
Six makers from all over Europe gathered together to work on the same model: the 1773 “Cozio” Guadagnini. A 40ish viola with a lot of character. From left to right: Bas Maas (NL), Francesco Piasentini, David Deroy (FR), Paul Noulet (FR), Roberto Jardón Rico (ES), Jessica De Saedeleer (BE, unfinished). Far right: Violist Elin Haver with her own instrument, made in 1963 by Max Millant.
The outcome of this project has been summarized in an article, published on The Strad in the September issue of 2025.
